Story

In English, her. In Punjabi, Heer.

HER is a love song. LAALA sings to the one who stole his heart, and lets himself dream out loud about every wish he has for her.

The title works in two languages. In English it is her. In Punjabi, ਹੀਰ is Heer — the beloved of the Heer-Ranjha legend, the name Punjab has given the one you love for 250 years.

The cover is a single flame, and the sparks rising off it are the wishes. HER is the second light in Melodies by Laala, a run of melodic singles released every six weeks.

The hook

You're my Heer

ਜੱਟੀ ਤੂੰ ਹੀਰ ਰਕਾਨੇ…
ਦਿਲ ਜੱਟ ਦਾ ਮੋਹਗੀ ਨੀ

“You're my Heer. And my heart is already yours.”

LAALA wrote HER as a conversation between two lovers. He makes promises; she asks whether they're real. He answers with his village, his roots and his family, and admits the truth at the end: for now, she still lives in his dreams.

In his words

  • HimCome to my village—come as my bride, as the one who belongs in my home.
  • HimI'm from Kheri village—“Laale” is my identity, my roots.
  • HimYour parents will understand on their own when they see you standing with me.
  • HimHonestly… you still live in my dreams. You stay in my thoughts.

Him
I've got dreams in my eyes, and I'm determined to make them real. I've got plans and responsibilities, but I'll complete them—no matter what.
Her
You talk like you're carrying big hopes. Where do I fit into all of this?
Him
With you. My friendship and love for you is deep—serious. It's not just a passing thing. You're like Heer to me—the one my heart is stuck on. You've completely taken over my mind.
Her
You say that, but is it real… or just words?
Him
It's real. You're so beautiful that there isn't anyone else like you. Come to my village—come as my bride, as the one who belongs in my home.
Her
Your village? Your people? That's a big step.
Him
I'm from Kheri village—“Laale” is my identity, my roots. I'm not the type who keeps the door half-open and changes intentions. If you come to my heart, I won't “turn you away.” I'll keep you with respect and commitment.
Her
People these days change fast. How do I know you won't change too?
Him
That's the point—I've seen how the world is. Nowadays you can't trust someone's voice or promises easily. People go abroad and start acting foreign, but real Punjabi pride and character doesn't get thrown away. I might travel, I might grow, but I won't erase who I am.
Her
And my parents? Society? They'll ask questions.
Him
Your parents will understand on their own when they see you standing with me. When you choose me openly, the rest falls into place.
Her
You act like I'm already yours.
Him
Honestly… you still live in my dreams. You stay in my thoughts. I don't even know your full address yet, your “place,” your whole story—you haven't told me everything. But I feel you.
Her
I'm shy. I keep things hidden.
Him
I can tell. You smile softly, you laugh, you look perfect doing it—and even if you hide your feelings from everyone, I'll understand what's in your heart.
Her
So what am I to you?
Him
You're my Heer. And my heart is already yours.

Desi at heart
